Title: Forensic dental analysis of cranio-dental remains for biological profiling

Abstract:

This study examines the cranio-dental remains of eleven individuals to assess biological sex, estimated age of death, and pathological conditions affecting the maxillo-mandibular alveolar bone and dental arches. Following forensic dental inquiry protocols, the research employs macroscopic, microscopic, and metric analyses alongside photographic documentation. The primary objective is to examine developmental, acquired, and degenerative conditions affecting the maxillo-mandibular alveolar bone surfaces and dental arches, with a focus on the gomphotic relationship between teeth and their alveolar sockets. This includes analyzing both teeth that remain in situ and those lost intra vitam at various stages of adult life. Particular emphasis is placed on the assessment of incisal and occlusal wear patterns (odontoglyphic wear) to distinguish functional masticatory modifications from pathological changes, trauma impact (i.e. relevant to the quality of dietary preparation), and potential non-masticatory uses of teeth. Additionally, the study seeks to locate and analyze conditions such as periapical abscesses, periodontal disease, ante-mortem dental loss, and various carious cavities. By integrating these observations, the research aims to construct tentative biological and pathological profiles for each individual. This research provides a valuable opportunity to explore the relationship between cranio-dental pathology, aging processes, and environmental influences. By examining dental health, wear patterns, and oral diseases, this study offers deeper insight into how factors such as diet, lifestyle, and overall health shaped the lives of these individuals. The findings offer insights into both personal histories and population-level trends in cranio-dental health.
